Wheaton Park
consists of 63 acres with a large portion being wooded and has many amenities to offer the outdoor enthusiast including: updated playground equipment, tennis court, pickleball courts, basketball court, gaga ball, ball fields, batting cages, sledding hill, an ice skating rink, trails with different terrains, butterfly garden, snowmobile trailer parking with trail access, picnic table areas, reservable pavilions, and a Little "Take a Book. Share a Book." Library!
NEW IN 2024
A new recreation amenity was added to Wheaton Park in partnership with BSA Troop 71 Elk Mound and Scout Mason Books Eagle Scout project. Two pickleball courts with portable pickleball nets will share the existing tennis and basketball court area. This project created a multi-use recreation area that allows park users to play pickleball, tennis, or basketball. The basketball hoops and backboards were also reconditioned.
To play pickleball all you have to do is the following:
Bring your own paddles and balls.
Unlock the pickleball portable net wheel locks.
Roll the pickleball portable net onto the designated court. NOTE: Pickleball portable net stored on north side of the tennis court is for east side pickleball court (closest to the upper pavilion). Pickleball portable net stored on south side of the tennis court is for west side pickleball court (closest to the porta potties).
Lock the pickleball portable net wheel locks.
Play pickleball!
When completed with your pickleball experience please return the pickleball portable net(s) to their respective storage location(s), lock the pickleball portable net wheel locks, and roll-up the tether(s).
was developed in 2021 in partnership with a Chippewa Valley Master Gardeners grant in order to further conservation efforts in the park and provide monarch conservation that helps with monarch migration in North America. The butterfly garden is located on the east side of 38th Street when enterring the park and has a wide range of different plant species that are tagged for educational purposes. Plus there is a picnic table and bench for seating!

Wheaton Park Little Free Library "Take a Book. Share a Book."
was created in 2023 through a partnership with BSA Troop 71 Elk Mound and Scout Shawn Pinder's Eagle Scout project. This little free library brings books for all ages!
It really is that easy:
"Take a Book" for reading in the park or other places. Anyone may take a book - neighbors, park visitors, even passersby - the books are always free!
"Share a Book" for others in the Little Free Library. Book donations are welcome at this Little Free Library!
This new park feature will be available year-round as the little free library is located next to the tennis court parking lot by the trail map. This parking lot is plowed during the winter season.
Reminder: For the safety of all boat landing users and pursuant to Wis. Stat. §167.30 – NO hunting is allowed on boat landing property.
NEW IN 2023 - Major boat landing renovations including boat launch replacement, new public dock, better handicap parking/accessibility, and security lighting. It was a busy summer construction season with the boat launch, new public boat dock, and handicap parking/accessibility being completed. We are almost finished with the project with just the security lighting and signage left which are both planned to complete in November.

Town of Wheaton was awarded by Wisconsin Waterways Commission in August 2022 a Department of Natural Resources Recreational Boating Facilities (RBF) Grant for the maximum amount of 50% of the estimated project costs!
Advertisement of Bids were completed on February 14, 2023 with Town Board awarding bids to Skid Steer Guy, LLC and J.F. Brennan Company, Inc on March 14, 2023. Here is a summary of the submitted project bids.

It is also home to the Elk Creek Trout Stamp & Sports Fish Restoration Project, which was initiated as a cooperative effort on the part of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Ojibleau Chapter of Trout Unlimited. “It started in 2000 and had been originally planned as a two-year project; however, with the availability of the trout crew and surplus funds from other projects the entire 2,430 feet was completed in just two months. Record rainfall for this period (9 in. over normal) slowed the effort and added expense. 2,110 tons of granite riprap and 1,371 cubic yards of fieldstone were used to complete construction. All disturbed areas were seeded and mulched throughout the stream thread. Surveys show that trout over 12 inches inhabit this stream. This project will significantly increase the number of adult fish in Elk Creek.”: (Expenditures of Inland Waters Trout Stamp Revenues Administrative Report 52 2003,16)

explore more than 480 miles of trails with the Wheaton Trail, Sunnyside Trail, and Rough Rider Trail venturing through Wheaton Township. Wheaton Ball League
is all about the kids having fun playing ball and learning the game! Programs are available for kids age 4 to 14. More information is available on Town of Wheaton website under Wheaton Ball League.
Chippewa County Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan
2024-2029 was adopted as the Official Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan for the Town of Wheaton on November 14, 2023.
In 2023 the Town of Wheaton partnered with Chippewa County and West Central Regional Planning Commission to update the Chippewa County and Town of Wheaton Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plans. For the Town of Wheaton the updated plan included: an inventory of current Town of Wheaton recreational opportunities and infrastructure, an outdoor recreation needs assessment, recommendations, and future action plan.
The outdoor recreation needs assessment focused on 3 areas:
Space Needs—Whether or not there is adequate land or open space to serve the needs of the population.
Service Needs—Whether or not outdoor recreational sites are adequately located to serve the needs of the community.
Activity/Amenity Needs—Whether or not the existing, available park lands allow for a specific, desired recreational activity or amenity.
PLEASE NOTE: The future action plan does not guarantee that all listed improvements will be made, but helps identify future priorities for Town-owned facilities as citizen demand and funding is made available through allocation, grants, or partnership opportunities.
