DOG LICENSE CHANGES - EFFECTIVE DECEMBER 1, 2025

After a thorough review over the last 6 months of all dog associated expenses, revenues, plus changes implemented in 2024 to reduce expenses we can no longer continue to fund the over 40% shortfall in revenue versus expenses with the general fund.  Resolution 2025-02 was adopted by the Town Board on June 10, 2025 to increase dog license fees effective December 1, 2025.  We have included the resolution below for full transparency.  The resolution will also be posted to the Ordinances and Resolutions page.

A resolution to increase dog license fees in the Town of Wheaton, Chippewa County 

WHEREAS, the Town of Wheaton is responsible for issuing dog licenses and maintaining accurate records for all dogs with the township limits, as mandated by state law, county ordinance, or applicable legal requirements; and 

WHEREAS, dogs more than 5 months of age such be licensed by April 1 of each year or within 30 days of acquiring ownership on or before the dog reaches licensable age. 

WHEREAS, the costs associated with town animal control officer, Chippewa County Humane Society, licensing, and processing need to be priced to sustain operation of these services; and  

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Town Board of the Town of Wheaton, as follows: 

  1. Effective December 1, 2025 the annual license fees for dogs with the Town of Wheaton will be adjusted as follows: 
    1. Spayed/neutered dogs:              $12.00 
    2. Unspayed or unneutered dogs:  $18.00
    3. Multiple dogs:  Six to Twelve:     $60.00 (six dogs required kennel license) 
    4. Each additional tag for multiple dogs in excess of 12:  $10.00 

2. Late Fees/ Penalties:

    1. WI Statue:  responsibly of ownership and fines will match state statue
    2. You will be charged a minimum late fee of $25.00 for each dog five months of age or over who is unlicensed by April 1st of each year or 30 days of acquiring ownership on or before the reaches licensable age.  
    3. If you fail to have your dog vaccinated against rabies as required by statue, you may be required to forfeit not less than $50.00 or more than $100.00
    4. If the owner permits a dog to run at large, they shall forfeit not less than $25.00 or more than $100.00 for first offense and not less than $50.00 nor more than $200.00 for subsequent offenses.
